Cómo hacer jabón (4) -How to make soap (4)

Yesterday I forgot to tell you about the quantities of oil you need to buy. For our first recipe you will need to buy one litre of olive oil and 200 grams of coconut oil, but if you wish you can buy more coconut as you will use it in every soap recipe because it adds suds to the soap.I also forgot to tell you that you will need some kind of mould to pour your soap into, you can use any plastic moulds such as food tupperwares, silicone moulds for cakes or any other container as long as it is not metal. For those of you who already know how to make soap and who like the one in the photo, here is the recipe:

Olive Oil - 560 gr

Palm Oil - 560 gr

Coconut Oil-168 gr

Castor Oil - 70 gr

Jojoba Oil - 22 gr

Emu Oil - 20 gr

Water - 460 gr

Sodium hidroxide - 179 gr

Pure cocoa powder -20 gr

Balls and slices of white soap made beforehand.

If you think it is too much soap you can halve all the quantities.

And tomorow ... more soap!!

Cómo hacer jabón (3) - How to make soap (3)

How is the week going? I hope you are working very little and enjoying a lot , if not, take a rest, you deserve it. Seat down and let yourself go, don't do anything, don't think, just enjoy the moment.
And now time to continue with our lessons to learn how to make soap.
Today I will talk about the ingredients that you need to make soap.
Water: to make soap you can use destilled water, bottled mineral water or filtered tap water.
Caustic soda (lye) : you need to buy lye which is 100% sodium hidroxide.Be careful about this and buy only 100% pure sodium hidroxide. Normally you can buy it in supermarkets, drugstores or shops where they sell chemical products.
Oils: the most common oils used for soap making are olive, coconut and palm oil, but any oil or fat can be used, for example avocado, jojoba, sheabutter, lard, etc. In another post I will tell you online shops where you can buy it. But just now, for our first soap we will use olive oil and coconut oil. If for some reason you cannot find this oils in your country, leave me a comment and tell me which oils are easy for you to get and I will post a recipe so you can make soap with the oils you have.
Jars/Jugs : you need a couple of jars, one to mix the water and the lye ( it has to be a glass jar) and another one to mix the oils and the lye solution.
Scale: You will need an accurate scale to weigh the ingredients, better an electronic one because they are more accurate.
Hand blender: You can use any blender to make soap but if you have to buy one , buy one with a stainless steel stick rather than plastic. Having said that , let me tell you that mine is a really old one and with plastic stick, ha,ha,ha. I am telling you this so you see that all I am explaing here is the theory but then everyone can adapt this to their needs or to what they have.
Later on you will be able to use colorants, other additives, esential oils, etc, but for now you have enough with this ingredients.
In my next post I will tell you about the security measuremments you have to take to use lye.
And after that you will be ready to make your first soap.
Go on ... what are you waiting for? hurry, go and get the lye and the oils...

Cómo hacer jabón (2) - How to make soap (2)

How is that weekend going? I hope it's being great and that you are ready to continue with the tutorial to make soap.
I have received many comments and I have seen that some of you know nothing at all about making soap, so I have decided to explain some basic things before we start making soap. To start with let me tell you that soap is always made out of fat or oil and lye (caustic soda /Sodium hydroxide or some other alkali). All real soap is made that way.
Now, some of you ask ,what about glycerine soap? Well, glycerine soap is not really soap, glycerine is a subproduct obtained from soap making, industrial soap made out of oil and lye follows a special procedure in order to take out the glicerine , then chemical products are added to the glycerine to give it more suds , to make it harder etc and the glycerine bars are obtained. Then you can melt a piece of glycerine bar, mix it with colorant, fragance etc, put it on a mold, let it harden and voila ... you have glycerine soap.
But if you want to make real soap, you are always going to need oil or fat and lye. The thing is that each oil needs a different quantity of lye to transform itself into soap, for that reason if we want to make a soap to wash the cloths we will use the exact amont of lye or even more that is needed to convert the oil in soap in order to have a soap that will leave our clothes really clean, on the other hand if the soap is going to be used on our body we will use less lye than is required so some oil will remain without reacting with the lye and therefore making a more misturizing bar of soap.
I hope with these explanations I have shed some light on the soap making process , next time we will continue the tutorial and hopefully you will soon be making soap.

I wish you all a really great and lovely Sunday.

How about starting the day with a star anise soap? Mmmmmmmm....... I love star anise .... that scent like liquorice drives me crazy ... The star anise smell is one of those scents that you either love or you really hate , for some unknown reason the smell of star anise arises totally opposite responses, I hope you are the ones who love it ....
This soap apart from having star anise essential oil, has oils of coconut, castor , palm, olive and jojoba and they are as always organic. One of these days I will tell you why I think is very important that the oils used to make soap are organic. As I am a little absentminded if I forget to tell you, just give me a shout ....Have a great day!!!

Cómo hacer jabón - How to make soap

.
.
Today I am going to explain you how to make soap. Before I start, I will tell you that making soap is really easy, as easy as to make mayonnaise or a milkshake, so if you ever have made any you won't have any problem making soap.
For everyone to understand I am going to explain how to make soap in a really simple way.
Soap is a salt which results from mixing an oil or fat with an alkaline base which will normally be sodium hidroxide ( commonly called lye ) disolved in water. So:
OIL + LYE + WATER = SOAP
Although there is more much to it, in essence that is the basis for making soap.
Next day I will continue this tutorial and I will explain the proccess you have to follow to make soap out of these three ingredients, and I will also give you a recipe to make your first soap.
Meanwhile I hope no one tries making soap unless they already know how . Working with lye can be dangerous if you don´t have some precautions which I will also tell you about next time.
Till then, have fun.

This soap has been made with a Pringles chips tube as a mould to give the soap a round shape and the technique to make the swirl is very easy, as soon as I have some spare time I will post a tutorial on how to do it, so check back as I will soon have a tutorials area. For those of you who have no idea of how to make soap, do not worry as I will be also giving directions on how to make soap from scratch.
The oils that it's been made of are olive, coconut, palm, castor and jojoba (all organic), I also has blue ultramarine dye. I hope you like it, if so you can leave a comment.

Here is the soap I have made out of organic cocoa, it has oils (all organic) of olive, palm, coconut, castor and jojoba; I have also added an oil that I have never used before, emu oil. They say it gives soap a nice creamy texture. I dont really like using animal fats on my soap but I have used to experiment and see what it can add to the soap, I will let you know when it is ready to use.

Jabón de naranja y clavo - Clove and orange Soap

Here you go some wonderfully smelling soaps. They are orange and clove soaps and they are made of olive, coconut, palm, sheabutter and castor oils. They also have orange and clove essential oils and a little bit of tea tree oil which helps the smell to keep longer. All the oils I use are organic and the essential oils some are organic and some aren't as they are more difficult to get hold of and they are much, much more expensive...

Well ... I finally bought a photo camera, so here goes the first soap. It's made of olive oil, coconut oil and shea butter. It feels wonderfully velvety and leaves my skin feeling wonderful. I have also made mini heart and star soaps. I hope you like them.
